![]() ![]() The purpose of this study was to examine research evidence about effective childrearing in stepfamilies (i.e., parenting practices that contribute to children's physical, cognitive, and emotional well‐being). The results are discussed with reference to couples' interventions and the potential of autonomy supportive strategies to improve the quality of couples' communication and relationship quality. Additionally, results of Study 2 demonstrated that eliciting disclosure using autonomy supportive strategies rather than controlling strategies resulted in greater and more personal content in partner disclosure. In both studies, autonomy supportive strategies were perceived as more acceptable and more effective than controlling strategies for eliciting disclosure and maintaining privacy from one's partner. ![]() In Study 2 (N = 78 couples), we coded romantic partners' use of autonomy supportive and controlling strategies in recorded conversations, then assessed the acceptability and effectiveness of strategies. In Study 1 (N = 268 individuals), participants rated the acceptability and effectiveness of autonomy supportive and controlling strategies presented in hypothetical scenarios. In the present work, we propose that strategies that support the partner's autonomy, rather than being controlling, may be more acceptable and effective in eliciting disclosure and maintaining privacy in romantic relationships. Romantic partners vary in their desire to share private information, and each partner must use appropriate strategies to elicit disclosure or maintain privacy from one's partner. Overall, the analysis of the pre-existing narratives determined that relational dialectics theory can be applied to narratives of sexual violence on online forums, such as Reddit, which indicates the utility of these narratives for future study using relational dialectics. ![]() However, no narrative in the study concerned clear references to the meaning within the authors' relationship after having disclosed their victimization, leaving that research question unanswered. Further, some of the narrative authors also discussed reactions they had received when disclosing their victimization to individuals with whom they had a relationship. By conducting a contrapuntal analysis on the 8 narratives, it was found that the relevant dialectical tensions present were openness versus closedness and revelation versus concealment. In recognition of the ethics of utilizing narratives pertaining to sexual violence, the authors of the narratives were contacted through the direct messaging feature of Reddit to request consent for the use of their narrative in the study, with narratives only being used in the study if consent was granted. Analysis was conducted on narratives from Reddit with coding concerning the components of the utterance chain within relational dialectics theory, dialectical tensions discussed in the relational dialectics literature reviewed, and the reactions narrative authors received when disclosing victimization. Literature reviewed for the study concerned the how victims and survivors of sexual violence process their experiences, how individuals discuss traumatic experiences through narrative, reactions victims and survivors receive from individuals when disclosing victimization, along with literature on relational dialectics theory, including dialectical tensions and the utterance chain. The goal of the study was to examine the dialectical tensions present in the narratives on experiences of sexual violence, the reactions the narrative authors note in having disclosed the incident to a relational other, and the meaning within the relationship after disclosing sexual violence. This paper examines pre-existing narratives of sexual violence on the forum website Reddit through the framework of relational dialectics theory. ![]()
